Facebook, one of the world’s most popular social networks, acquired Instagram just a year ago for $1 billion but it seems as the hunger for attaining the social networks has not yet been fulfilled as the company made the acquisition once again. This time it is the widely popular instant messaging application “Whatsapp” that is bought by the company at a mind blowing price of $16 billion. You may be surprised to know that Microsoft acquired Nokia for $ 7 billion which is $ 9 billion less that what Facebook has paid for a company having less than 50 employees.

After the acquisition, Whatsapp will not be merged with companion applications of Facebook and operate independently. However, Facebook will contribute in the growth of the company and their management team will oversee the future affairs of the company.
Whatsapp has currently more than 450 million active users and out of these 70 percent are the daily active users. Other than this, almost 1 million people sign up everyday. Considering the statistics, it is growing at a much faster pace and Facebook has made the right decision of acquiring the Whatsapp, which definitely help in the growth of their business.

Before a week, Viber was also sold out for less than $1 billion. Though, it seems as Facebook has paid hefty sum but in the long-run they will surely get the benefit.
